6 Things That Make a Great Cut Flower

With thousands of varieties of flowers to choose from, the things that make a good cut flower are slightly different from one person to the next.
For me, as a flower farmer-florist, there are 6 things I look for:
01. Ability to hydrate well once cut tops the list. I can’t use greenery or flowers (no matter how beautiful) if they wilt.
02. Vase life is next. If that gorgeous bloom drops its petals after two days in the vase, it’s rather disappointing. That being said, some flowers like sweet peas only have a vase life of about five days, but they are the most wonderful five days of beauty and fragrance, so they are worth growing.
03. Stem length is very important. A strong, long stem means the floral material is more versatile, especially for bouquets.
04. Growth habit is a strong consideration. Straight stems are easier to harvest and use than a tangled mass.
05. Scent. Most modern flower varieties have lost their fragrance, so I focus on old-fashioned heirloom flowers. Sometimes, just one stem can fill a room with an intoxicating scent! Scent can also bring favorite memories to mind.
06. Love! Our time, energy, and resources are precious, so we grow flowers that I personally love.
And I think you’ll love them, too!
