The Posies Story

For every business, especially deeply personal ones, there is a “Why” behind them. Being a people-person, I enjoy learning behind-the-scenes stories. So I thought I would share mine with you. Here is the Posies story.

Thanks to my darling Mama (and best friend) and her greenish thumb, I developed a love of all things roses. Oh, roses! Over the years, she and I attended many garden tours and lectures together on the subject.

Soon after “discovering” roses, I found that I absolutely love flowers- the colors, fragrances, shapes, how they grew. So much so that in elementary school I wrote a story called My Adventures in Flowerland for which I researched all the different varieties of flowers in the encyclopedia (there was no internet back then!)

And then I came to appreciate and learn about artfully arranging flowers into gorgeous bouquets. As a former cake decorator, I often used fresh flowers in my designs.

Heirloom vegetables came into my radar. With them heirloom flowers and heritage livestock breeds. Supporting the preservation of these became a passion.

But this love is about more than the blooms themselves, it’s the whole start-to-end process: planting seeds and waiting anxiously to see their little tips emerge from the dark soil, observing how the plants grow because each one is unique, watching the flowers dance in the breeze as the sunlight sparkles on petals, the deep satisfaction of creating a beautiful bouquet for someone to enjoy in their home.

Throughout most of my life, there have been vegetable gardens off-and-on tended by either my parents or myself. Years ago I grew a small cutting garden (USDA zone 11) with sweet peas, iris, sunflowers, calendula, nigella, cornflowers, zinnia, stock, carnations, bells of Ireland, nasturtium, and baby’s breath. How I adored that little patch!

Then we moved to western Washington State (zone 7) where the landscaping of our new house included mature peonies (a new love!), hydrangea, lilac, iris, and poppy.

Fast forward to buying remote land in the northeastern mountains of Washington (zone 5), what a change! I spent many years just getting to know the climate and native flora and fauna, all the while dreaming of another flower garden.

Flowers are even the name theme for our flock of Shetland sheep!

Then my heart was broken not once but three times in 2023. Every part of my soul began to crave fresh flowers. Desperately. My eyes actually ached for their beauty and uplifting colors. Not simply a bouquet from the grocery store (the only retail source in my small town), but flowers growing right outside my door. The humming sound of bumble bees flying happily from blossom to blossom beckoned. I knew it could not be put off any longer.

So Posies at Highland Glenn Ranch sprouted from an abiding love for flowers, grief, and the need to grow flowers to heal my heart.

From there it took root and grew because how could I not share the charm of flowers with others!

And the meaning behind the name? I think the words posy and posies are sweetly old-fashioned.

I am delighted to offer seasonal, locally grown, fresh bouquets to my community here in Ferry County!
