What Makes a Good Cut Flower?

With thousands of varieties of flowers to choose from, what makes a good cut flower is slightly different from one person to the next.

For me as a flower grower and floral designer, the ability to hydrate well once cut tops the list. I can’t use greenery or flowers (no matter how beautiful) if they wilt.

Vase life is next. If that gorgeous bloom drops its petals after two days in the vase, it’s rather disappointing. That being said, some flowers like sweet peas only have a vase life of about five days but they are so worth growing!

Stem length is important, too. A nice long stem means the floral material is more versatile, especially for bouquets.

Growth habit. Straight stems are easier to use harvest and use than a tangled mass.

Scent! Most modern flower varieties have lost their fragrance, so I focus on old-fashioned heirloom flowers. Sometimes just one stem can fill a room with intoxicating scent! Scent can also bring favorite memories to mind.

Love! My time, energy, and resources are precious so I grow the flowers that I personally love.

And I think you’ll love them, too!
