Dog Pregnancy - Week Four

Puppy Development (Days 22-28)

The embryos can be felt in the uterine horns around day 28. The spinal cords are developing and the embryos are beginning to grow facial features. The structure of the basic eyeball is formed with the primitive cornea, lens, and retina in place. Legs and paws also begin to form.

Changes in Mommy Dog

Her uterus will shortly fill with fluids to protect the embryos so now is when you can palpate and feel them (although we do not do this). After this point, it will be weeks until they can be felt again.

We can see growth in Lizzie’s belly girth and breast (mammary) tissue development!

Care of Lizzie

Lizzie does a lot of resting and snuggling.

Appetite may increase. We start to adjust her diet a little each week but avoid dramatic changes.

This is a delicate time, so while exercise needs to continue it should be done with great care– limiting rough play and making sure she doesn’t strain herself. Lizzie has scaled down how rough she plays with Shiloh all on her own.

Breeders’ To-Do-List

  • Put together the litter pedigree

  • Update puppy contract, if necessary

  • Bring in plenty of high-quality food for Lizzie as her needs increase during gestation and especially lactation!

  • Take inventory of whelping supplies and order needed items.
