Time is marching along!
Day 42 is where it all starts to speed up, with mommy dog entering the third and final stage of gestation!
Puppy Development (Days 36-42)
The fetus really starts to look like a dog! Claws grow and their weight increases. Pigmentation develops. The eyes now have lids and remain sealed until around ten days after birth.
Changes in Mommy Dog
She is noticeably more uncomfortable at this point. She may vomit occasionally due to the extra pressure against her stomach. It is normal to notice clear fluid discharge from her vulva.
Care of Lizzie
Adjust her daily amount of food again.
Appetite may decrease but she will still gain. This is simply a matter of discomfort. Lizzie now gets three smaller meals each day which helps a great deal.
We do not allow her to jump on/off surfaces or strain herself!
Breeders’ To-Do-List
Purchase frozen raw goats milk (we didn’t milk our goats this year.)
Make sure the veterinarian will be on hand in case emergency intervention is needed.
